"Queen of the Desert": Berlin Review

Nicole Kidman plays British traveller and archaeologist Gertrude Bell in the film Werner Herzog's "Queen of the desert". This tape takes part in the competition program of the Berlinale.

Alarming

Herzog is a great hero of mine but his documentaries are where you see him at his best these days.

Bad Lieutenant and My Son, My Son were oh-kay but looked more like homages to David Lynch than Herzog at his intense best.

Sorry

If you are looking for a reason why this movie has failed, look no further than Nicole Kidman. She plays the lead character. She consistently lacks chemistry with all her leading men and due to a deplorable lack of talent, she cannot elevate a film above mediocre. She alone is to blame.

It was boring. Kidman is quite a dull actress and she doesn't have the charisma or technical talent to elevate a movie. Naomi would have been a better choice and probably looked a bit more natural and rugged. Personally I think Tilda Swinton would have been spot on as Gertrude Bell. I was suprised when they laughed at Pattinson & Franco as it was hoped that they would bring interest. Sounds like this could be another Bel Ami for him. Not Herzog's greatest.
